Recording a Podcast the Same Day You Fly Into San Diego: A Guest's Guide

A lot of people who record with us are only in town for a day or two. They fly in for a meeting, a conference, or a speaking gig, and they want to knock out a podcast appearance or two while they are here. If that is you, the good news is that a same-day recording in San Diego is very doable. The trick is planning around a tight schedule so you actually leave with usable files instead of a promise to "send them later."

Here is how to make a fly-in recording work without wasting your limited hours.

Why record while you are already in town?

Travel is the hard part of good podcast video. Getting two or three people in the same room, on real cameras, with clean audio, is the whole battle. If you are already flying in for something else, you have solved that problem by accident. Stacking a recording session onto a trip you were already taking is one of the cheapest ways to get high-quality content.

This is especially true if you are a guest on someone's show, or a host who wants to record with a local guest you rarely get to see in person. Remote calls are fine. In-person on three cameras looks like a different tier entirely.

How close is the studio to the airport and downtown hotels?

We are at 1111 6th Avenue on the 4th floor, right in Downtown San Diego. San Diego International is about 10 minutes out by car, which is unusual for a downtown location. Most cities put you 30 to 45 minutes from the terminal. Here you can land, drop bags at your hotel, and be recording within the hour if the timing lines up.

A realistic same-day timeline

• Land, clear the airport, grab a rideshare or your rental.
• Check in or drop bags. Downtown hotels are minutes from us.
• Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your session to settle in.
• Record your 90-minute block. The engineer handles cameras, audio, and lighting so you just talk.
• Leave with your raw files the same day.

If you have an early flight the next morning, you can record in the afternoon and still have a normal evening. If you fly out same day, we can build around your departure time so you are not sweating a boarding call.

What "leave with files the same day" actually means

This matters more for travelers than anyone. When you are local, waiting a few days for files is no big deal. When you are flying home, you want the footage in hand before you get on the plane.

Our sessions start at $350 for 90 minutes, and that includes the engineer, three cameras, pro audio, and lighting. You walk out with your files that day. That means the video and audio are yours immediately, whether you edit them yourself, hand them to your own team, or send them our way later.

How to prep when you only get one shot

A same-day session has less margin for error, so a little prep goes a long way.

Lock the topic before you land

Have your talking points or interview questions ready before you get on the plane. You do not want to spend your recording block figuring out what the episode is about. The clearer you are going in, the more content you get out.

Think in more than one episode

Since you traveled to get here, get your money's worth. A 90-minute block can often produce more than one episode or a batch of segments you can space out over weeks. If you host a show, line up two guests back to back, or record a solo episode plus an interview. The room is set up either way.

Bring your own mic notes, not your own gear

You do not need to pack a mic, an interface, or a light. That is the entire point of using a studio on a trip. Travel light and let the room handle production. Bring the one thing only you have: your ideas and your notes.

Recording around a conference or trade show

If your San Diego trip is built around an event at the Convention Center, a downtown studio gives you something the show floor never will: a quiet, controlled room. Convention halls are loud, unpredictable, and impossible to light well. Walking a few minutes off-site to record means your episode does not sound like it was captured in a crowd.
