Every week someone sends us a file and asks if we can "fix it in post." Sometimes the answer is yes, and the fix is quick. Sometimes the answer is yes, but it eats hours you did not budget for. And sometimes the honest answer is no, because the problem lives in the recording, not the edit.

What podcast audio cleanup actually fixes

Cleanup is not a magic button. It is a stack of targeted moves an editor makes to solve specific problems. Most of what we do falls into a few categories.

Steady background noise

Air conditioning hum, computer fans, room tone, a fridge in the next room. This is the easiest thing to remove because it is constant and predictable. Software learns the noise profile and subtracts it. Done carefully, nobody can tell it was ever there. Push it too hard and voices start sounding like they are underwater, so it is a judgment call, not a slider you max out.

Uneven volume between speakers

One guest leans in, the other sits back. One person is naturally loud, the other mumbles. We fix this with leveling and compression so listeners are not reaching for the volume knob every time someone new talks. This is standard on almost every episode.

Plosives, sibilance, and mouth noise

You cannot fully separate a voice from the room it was recorded in.

Clipping and distortion

If the input level was set too high and the audio distorted, that information is gone. It was never captured cleanly in the first place. We can soften how harsh it sounds, but we cannot rebuild what the microphone never recorded.

Two voices on one microphone

When two people share a single mic, or when a laptop mic picks up both sides of the conversation, you cannot separate them into individual tracks later. That means you cannot fix one person's volume without affecting the other. Separate mics on separate tracks is the difference between a fast edit and a painful one.

Bad internet on a remote guest
